The Biological Hijack: Re-evaluating the CASA Paradigm
The CASA (Computers Are Social Actors) paradigm—pioneered by Byron Reeves and Clifford Nass—posits that humans lack the specialized biological circuitry to differentiate between real and simulated social cues. From a Human Factors perspective, CASA is not a design "feature" but a cognitive vulnerability. Humans are evolutionarily hardwired to use social signals to assess intent and safety.
When designers introduce mimetic flourishes—such as naturalistic pauses or empathetic language—they are hijacking a biological shortcut. This creates an immediate spike in CSAT (Customer Satisfaction Score), which measures short-term user happiness. However, it establishes a deceptive foundation. By mimicking the signals of human consciousness without the underlying accountability of a human actor, designers create a fundamental mismatch in user mental models.
The Burden of Detection: Mimicry as Cognitive Load
In traditional UX (User Experience) design, a "good" tool is transparent. In mimetic AI, the interface becomes opaque. The increase in mimicry shifts the user’s role from Functional Operator to Social Evaluator, introducing the Burden of Detection.
This burden manifests as a constant, subconscious "reality check" that the user must perform:
Is this empathy a reflection of state or a pre-programmed script?
Is this "thoughtful pause" actual computation or a visual artifice?
This meta-analysis requires significant Cognitive Load—the total amount of mental effort being used in the working memory. While a tool-like interface allows the user to focus on the task, a mimetic agent forces the user to navigate the Sincerity Gap. The more sophisticated the mimicry, the heavier the "tax" on the user to differentiate between human-like response and human-like agency.
The Uncanny Valley of Mind: A Diagnostic Shift
While the traditional Uncanny Valley—first identified by Masahiro Mori—focuses on physical likeness, the modern AI frontier has revealed the Uncanny Valley of Mind. This occurs when the simulation of "thought" outpaces the agent's actual utility.

When the agent inevitably fails to handle a social nuance, the user experiences the Betrayal Effect. This is not perceived as a software bug; it is perceived as a broken social contract. This leads to a decline in LTV (Lifetime Value), the total revenue a business can expect from a single customer account over time, as the user moves from engagement to Algorithmic Aversion (the tendency to lose faith in a system after a single error).
From Seamless to Seamful: A Design Prescription
The current design trend favors "Seamlessness"—hiding the machine to create a frictionless experience. In the context of AI as a social actor, this is a Human Factors error. We should instead advocate for Seamful Design.
Seamful design prioritizes Functional Transparency over mimetic realism. To mitigate the "Burden of Detection," designers must:
Align Warmth with Competence: Social cues should never exceed the agent's actual authority.
Monitor FCR over CSAT: Focus on FCR (First Contact Resolution)—the percentage of issues resolved in a single interaction—rather than superficial satisfaction, to ensure utility remains the priority.
Minimize Extraneous Social Load: Remove mimetic flourishes that do not directly contribute to task completion.

Mimicry is a high-interest loan against user trust. As AI agents move from tools to actors, our goal must be to design interfaces that are machine-honest, reducing the psychological burden on the user and preserving the integrity of the human-computer relationship.
